What is the process of grief?

The loss of a loved one is one of the deepest and most shattering experiences in human life. It does not only affect the emotions — it changes the sense of time, security, identity and meaning. Grief is not a linear state and there is no 'right' way or timeframe for experiencing it.

In the process of grief, a person may pass through various states:

  • profound sadness and emptiness

  • anger, guilt or confusion

  • a sense of unreality or detachment

  • fear of the future and loneliness

These experiences are the mind's natural response to loss and are not a sign of weakness or 'failing to cope'.

How does therapy support the experience of loss?
