Panic Attacks – When Fear Takes Over the Body

Panic Attacks – When Fear Takes Over the Body

What are panic attacks?

Panic attacks are sudden, intense states of extreme fear that often appear without any visible external cause. They affect both the mind and the body and can be utterly exhausting.

Frequently experienced symptoms include:

  • rapid heartbeat and palpitations

  • shortness of breath or a feeling of suffocation

  • dizziness, trembling, sweating

  • tightness in the chest

  • a sense of losing control or fear of fainting

  • fear of death or 'going mad'

When attacks begin to recur, many people develop a fear of the panic itself, leading to constant tension, avoidance of situations and a growing restriction of daily life.

Why do panic attacks occur?

Panic attacks are not a sign of weakness. They are often the result of:

  • accumulated and prolonged stress

  • suppressed emotions and inner conflicts

  • anxious thought patterns

  • an experienced loss or traumatic event

  • a sense of lacking control and security

The mind 'triggers the alarm' when inner tension exceeds the capacity to cope.

How does therapy help with panic attacks?

In psychotherapy we work not only with the symptoms, but with the mechanism behind the panic.

The therapeutic process includes:

  • understanding the way panic attacks are triggered

  • techniques for managing the physical symptoms

  • working with thought reactions and catastrophic interpretations

  • reducing fear of the attack itself

  • restoring a sense of control and inner security

Over time, the intensity and frequency of attacks decrease, and confidence gradually returns.

Panic is a state that can be overcome

Many people live with the feeling that panic attacks will last forever. In reality, with appropriate psychological support, they can be understood, managed and overcome.

Therapy helps to build a new relationship with the body, with fear and with one's own reactions — without struggle, without self-coercion.
